Heat pumps usually perform best when they can heat the home using lower water temperatures. Underfloor heating uses a large surface area, which can make it a good match for low-temperature design.

That does not mean every home needs underfloor heating. Well-sized radiators can also work well when the heat loss and emitter outputs are checked properly.

When it makes most sense

Underfloor heating is usually easiest to justify during renovations, extensions, new floors or major room upgrades. It is harder to justify if a finished home would need significant disruption for only a small gain.

The decision should be based on room heat loss, floor build-up, insulation, floor covering and the wider heating design.
